Relieving pain in more than 70% of cases in just 3 sessions.
What is Shockwave therapy?
It is a safe, effective and non-invasive treatment where compressed air is sent into the handpiece, accelerating a projectile action which strikes a fixed applicator. The kinetic energy resulting from this movement is converted into a shockwave that helps stimulate healing and reduces pain. Backed with hundreds of clinic studies, the shockwave device has been proven to relieve pain in more than 70% of cases in just 3 sessions.
In Podiatry, we concentrate on the foot and leg, in this area the research explicitly supports the use of ESWT in Patellofemoral Syndrome (Runners Knee), Knee Osteoarthritis, Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (shin splints), Achilles Tendinopathy and Plantar Fasciitis. Although, we are not limited to those conditions.
Most people will be suitable for treatment, although you will need an assessment and your medical status reviewed prior to proceeding.
How does it work?
It is clinically proven to trigger various cellular mechanisms to encourage healing and provide immediate and long-lasting pain relief. While inflammation is a normal and healthy four-stage process, in chronic conditions the injured tissue has not been able to fully progress through the final remodelling stage. ESWT helps to interrupt this chronic state and organise the healing cycle.
- Produces a rapid increase in blood circulation, and with-it new healing cells, stimulating and accelerating the healing process.
- With penetrative power of up to 4cm, the treatment works to penetrate the tissue, promoting tissue remodelling.
- Stimulates the nerves which can reduce pain and sensitivity.

How many treatments will I need?
The standard, and recommended course involves three treatments delivered weekly. However, additional treatments may be required.
How long does treatment last?
The treatment time is dependent on the size of the area that we are treating, usually its around 5 minutes, but the larger the treatment area, the more treatment time needed. We use the rest of the appointment time to discuss your progress and recovery.
Does the treatment hurt?
The treatment can be uncomfortable, although all settings are adjustable to make the treatment tolerable for you.
What if it doesn’t work for me?
Unfortunately, despite a high success rate, it may not resolve every single case. Also, it is important for us to address the causes of the pain and we often recommend this treatment alongside exercises, occasionally orthotics and advise on your condition and aggravating factors. We recommend a thorough assessment of your foot pain so that we can create the most bespoke treatment plan.
