Nails
General nail trimming
We provide a simple nail cutting service, for non-problematic nails for people who just cannot get to their nails. Common difficulties include poor eyesight, being unable to reach, disability and those that find they have problems when they cut them themselves. It is a straightforward service open to anyone and everyone, you don’t need to have a reason to have us look after you.
Damaged or thickened nails
Nails can become thick for many reasons, including damage. Sometimes damage grows out of the nail plate over time as the nail grows up. If you have damaged the matrix, which is made up of cells which build your nail, damage can be permanent. That doesn’t mean they have to be uncomfortable or cause you embarrassment, even though we are medical professionals we like to make things look as aesthetically pleasing as possible. We can also provide advice on footwear and lifestyle factors to reduce the risk of recurrent damage to your nails.
Fungal nail infections
Fungal nail infections are very common, we often find that people reach our clinic after spending lots of time and money on treatments that have not helped or that the problem has quickly regressed after stopping treatment. Unfortunately, there is no miracle cure, although we endeavour to provide you with the best personalised advice.
Fungal nails are usually discoloured, lifted, chalky and thickened. In some cases, it is difficult to ascertain whether the changes in the nail are because of damage, psoriasis, or a fungal infection, as in some cases these present similarly. Where the diagnosis is not clear we offer two different types of nail testing to confirm whether fungus is present or not.
A lot of over-the-counter treatments improve the appearance of the nail without dealing with the fungal infection that is present under the nail so we can direct you to the best treatments. We also provide a treatment called Nail Fenestration, we painlessly drill holes in the nail where an anti-fungal solution can better penetrate. In cases where people have chosen not to treat the problem we can trim and reduce the nail, resulting in a more comfortable and less embarrassing problem.
Painful, ingrowing or curling nails
We deal with many awkward and difficult nails, taking a very gentle and professional approach to treating small children, the elderly and everyone in between. Nails can become painful for many reasons; corns, blisters and hard skin can occur under the nail or sometimes the nail can irritate the surrounding skin or ingrow.
Ingrowing nails are usually caused by a combination of factors, sometimes we are born with a nail shape that predisposes us to the problem, that alongside with poor nail cutting and narrow footwear can cause pain and put you at risk of infection.
We provide many treatment options for ingrowing nails, conservative treatment alongside advice to overcome the problem and we provide a permanent nail procedure under local anaesthetic that in 97% of cases will be a permanent solution. All these solutions are provided in house by our team of professionals with years of experience in ingrowing nails.
Other nail deformities
There are many causes to a change in nail aesthetic and it is worth getting them checked. As Podiatrists we look at hundreds of nails a month which makes us specialists in the field of nail pathology.
Skin
Alongside all your nail care needs, we can take care of the skin problems on your feet too. 90% us will experience a foot problem in our lives so put your feet in safe hands. Skin is the body’s boundary to infection, looking after our skin is important to protect ourselves and the skin on our feet is often neglected. Common skin problems we deal with includes callus, also knows as hard skin, corns alongside Verrucae and skin infections.
Hard skin and corns
This could also be called hyperkeratosis. Hard skin and corns build up in response to pressure, it is a mechanism where the skin attempts to protect itself and create a barrier. Although when we build too much of it, or a corn develops it can be counterproductive and painful.
At Green Podiatry, we can provide effective and painless treatment to get you comfortable and get the skin looking great again alongside dealing with the cause. The cause may be your shoes, the way your foot is postured or the way it moves, in some cases a biomechanical assessment may be recommended to find the underlying cause and provide appropriate cushioning or offloading.
Others have conditions which cause them to build more hard skin, the cause of this may be a small mutation in the keratin that makes up our skin. In these cases, we provide regular treatment and advice to manage the symptoms.
Cracked heels
Cracked heels can be painful and lead to embarrassment, especially in Summer when are feet are on show. This is often a combination of the skin being too dry alongside too much hard skin. We can reduce the hard skin and provide you with advice to keep your skin hydrated which results in more resilient and flexible skin.
Fungal skin infections
Fungal skin infections are also known as Athletes’ Foot or Tinea Pedis. Fungus is found naturally on the skin and in the right environment the fungus can thrive, impacting the natural balance of the skin resulting in an infection. This can affect the areas between the toes or on the sole of the foot. Over the counter treatments are often effective for this and our team can direct you to the best preparation to you following an assessment of your skin and medical status.
Diabetic foot care
Diabetes can affect our feet in a number of ways, some more well known than others. Because you have Diabetes, it does not mean you will develop a foot problem but it does make you more vulnerable and prevention is strongly recommended. Podiatrists can assess your needs and provide assessment and individualised treatment.
Chilblains
Chilblains are discoloured and painful, sometimes itchy lesions which usually appear on the tips of toes. It is a result of the tiny blood vessels that shrink in response to cold. It is often more apparent in those with Raynaud’s, sensitive skin or taking steroids. If you are concerned about the blood supply in your feet, then get in touch.
Sweaty feet
The medical name for sweaty feet is hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating can happen for no obvious reason and causes of which are still not fully known. This can be a difficult problem to treat, Podiatrists can provide help and advice to help best manage this condition. A good source of advice is Hyperhidrosis UK, https://hyperhidrosisuk.org/.
